Talk To The Hoof: Growth and Trimming.

The hoof grows 24 hours a day.  Frequent trims (every 4-6 weeks) are very important through the Spring, Summer and Fall.  With frequent trims, you allow the hoof to grow strong.  If you go too long before trims, the hoof will damage itself and begin to crack and chip.  The hoof will spend all its energy trying to repair itself, rather than growing thicker and stronger.

In the winter, hoof permitting, I trim every 6 weeks.  Contrary to what some people think, the hoof does need care during the winter.  It continues to grow; the rate of growth may slow down a bit because the animal decreases movement.
